Thanks to his new five-year, $255 million contract extension with Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts has become the league’s highest-paid player, wrote Nicki Jhabvala and Mark Maske for The Washington Post.

He also became the first quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft class to lock down an extension deal. The big payout is the result of a breakout 2022 season in which he led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance and finished second on the league MVP list.

Hurts has one more season left on his first deal. His new megadeal runs through the 2028 season.

The terms of the extension were confirmed by Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, on Monday. The deal comes with $179.3 million in guaranteed money, of which $110 million is fully guaranteed. Also included is a no-trade provision.

The Eagles selected the star quarterback in the second round of the 2020 draft. Late in his rookie season, he was made a starter, ahead of Carson Wentz. The move was part of an organizational reset orchestrated by owner Jeffrey Lurie, who also let go of Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson following the 2020 season.
