Center School, an independent school in Abington, holds a not-for-profit status, and teaching students about philanthropy and paying it forward is woven into the fabric of the school.

Center School’s student council recently asked the school community to help it collect socks and other much-needed items for the local organization For Love of Socks. The response was incredible: 545 pairs of socks were collected.

Also, Center School has a student committee, Kids Help Fund, that focuses on giving back to the community. Many years ago, Center School was given a generous contribution by a benefactor who wanted the school’s students to learn about philanthropy. Part of this education is to teach students how to be compassionate for others and work together to make decisions that will help a group in need or a specific cause.

Center School was one of only four schools the benefactor chose. The contributed money was put into an account and is restricted in that it cannot be used for Center School but only for charities chosen by Center School students. Donations to charities are made from the earnings of the contribution, so that the fund can continue to grow and be preserved for future Center School students. Through this fund, donations have been made to places such as St. Francis and St. Vincent Home for Children, Nor’Wester Therapy Dogs, and Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Center School also gives back in several other ways, including collecting for canned food drives, Toys for Tots, and various causes such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

You can pay it forward to Center School and make a difference in the education of Center School students by donating to their annual fund, directing EITC/OSTC credits to the school, or attending one of its fundraising events.

Center School is an intensive, literacy-focused school that educates students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, auditory processing disorder, and/or executive functioning disorder.
