A new plaque has been installed in Pottstown to commemorate the Pottstown Firebirds, a professional football team based in the borough from 1968 to 1970, writes Evan Brandt for The Pottstown Mercury.

The plaque, located near 152 High Street, was approved last February by borough council, but it took some time for the organizer, Bruno Baltazar, to raise the funds necessary to have it made and installed.

According to the sign, the Firebirds were a farm team for the Philadelphia Eagles. During its short lifespan, the team managed to win two championships in the Atlantic Coast Football League, which operated from 1962-1973.

“NFL Films produced two documentaries about the team, and two books were written to document the history of the team,” the sign reads.

The team played in Grigg Memorial Stadium at the Pottstown High School/Middle School campus.

The organizer also plans to hold a small ceremony next year, when the former players are available.

At his Pottstown Firebirds blog, Baltazar offers Firebirds hoodies, books, and shirts for sale. All the money raised “will go towards upkeeping the sign as the borough won’t be responsible for it,” he wrote.
