Doylestown Health has announced the launch of a new Family Medicine Residency program, the health system’s first accredited resident physician training program expanding Doylestown Health’s graduate medical education offerings.

With accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the residency program will begin in July 2023. The application process is now open.

Family Medicine physicians provide comprehensive healthcare for the whole family—from birth to end-of-life care. They are primary care physicians who are often patients’ first point of contact with a provider. Family Medicine physicians are essential to a patient’s well-being, through preventive healthcare, caring for patients as individuals and as part of the whole family.

“With our new Family Medicine Residency, we envision Doylestown Health an expanding hub of medical education outside of Philadelphia,” says Scott Levy, MD, chief medical officer of Doylestown Health.

“In addition to their working with our board-certified physicians in multiple specialties; they will have the opportunity to collaborate with our teams of clinicians who are consistently and nationally recognized for excellence when it comes to achievements in patient safety, population health and value-based care, among others.”

Establishing a residency program at Doylestown Health benefits the community in myriad ways. Training the next generation of family medicine physicians is essential to continuity of care and ensuring access to high-quality care. Research indicates that many physicians choose to live in and practice medicine in the communities where they attend their residency programs.

“The quality of care that you might see in a university setting, we provide here in a community setting. We also have direct access to specialty care, which is unique for a regional hospital,” says Benjamin Mathews, MD, director of the Family Medicine Residency program. “I am looking forward to working with and mentoring this inaugural class.”

With close proximity to historic Doylestown and located in Bucks County, Doylestown Health family medicine residents and their families will have an opportunity to discover and enjoy the vibrant art and culture scene, restaurants, shops, local farms, family activities and blue-ribbon schools.

Doylestown is also in close proximity to Philadelphia, and within reach of New York City and the shore.  “We hope that our residents will join us in practicing medicine post-residency and eventually settle in our wonderful community,” says Dr. Mathews. “This is an exciting time to be at Doylestown Health.”
