Center School, a nonprofit independent school in Abington, often hosts fundraisers to support programs that help students who learn differently. In October, the school celebrated ADHD Awareness Month and Dyslexia Awareness Month to bring attention to these disabilities and celebrate the strength, grit, and determination that its students exude every day.

Giving back is important to the entire community at Center School. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the school’s administration and faculty seized the opportunity to teach students about philanthropy and the impact that even the smallest donation can make to a cause.

Center School’s Student Council led the initiative. Its members created posters, hanging them around campus, and asked everyone to wear pink as a show of solidarity for those who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Students and staff rallied together and collected donations. Raising more than $200, they decided to donate the money to Jefferson Health’s Mary T. Sachs Breast Center, located nearby in Willow Grove.

Seventh-grade students Gilana Della Rocca and Reese Searle — along with the Head of School, Mindy Wawrzyniak, and Director of Marketing and Communication, Heidi Mozzillo — visited the breast center and presented the check to Jefferson Health’s philanthropy office. Both students were excited to represent their peers in the fundraising endeavor and enjoyed meeting and interacting with Jefferson Health personnel.
