For many, understanding how to travel and work remotely is an extremely important topic at the moment. Over the last two years, our working environment has seen a huge shift.

Before 2020, we were liable to go into the office and work in person. The concept of working from home was around, but certainly not the norm.

Over time, it has started to switch into more of a typical circumstance. And with that, we need to understand how to travel and work remotely. This allows us to visit family and friends, go on vacations, and more.

Whether you’re interested in tips on how to travel and work remotely for a long period of time, or just a few days or weeks, these tips will still apply.

Do you prefer to work in quiet, peaceful environments, or where you can hear the hustle and bustle of others? Do you prefer to work in bright light, or in dim light?

Some individuals may prefer to work during the day, and other night owls may prefer to work at night. No matter your particular circumstance, it is important to understand your preferences before you begin your travels.

This will allow you to plan out your day and be in the right environment when you want to get work done. Otherwise, you may find yourself in an unproductive or uncomfortable environment when you want to work.

In order to prevent this, we’d suggest starting out by understanding your style of work. Then, you’ll be able to travel and work remotely with ease.

For our second tip for traveling and working remotely, it is vital that you plan your travel for maintaining an internet connection.

When you don’t have an internet connection, many times you simply can’t work. Of course, this is going to be one of the most vital aspects of working remotely. Whether you prefer to use a hotspot or find wifi (typically preferred), you’re going to need to make sure you have access.

Ultimately, there are a lot of ways that you can get internet access these days. Many hotels do have access to wifi. Even if you’re on a plane, many do offer wifi services for an additional charge.

Or, if you’re on the ground, one tip for traveling while working remotely is to find a local book shop or cafe. If you just need to get a few hours of work done, these are relatively universal spots that you could stop in for a while – plus, have a coffee or two to keep you going.

Be sure that you have a reliable internet connection – it may be worth checking with your spot (calling, emailing) wherever you prefer to go to make sure the connection is reliable.

Tip #3: Getting the Right Tech

Another key tip for traveling while working remotely is to make sure you have the right (and best) technology for your situation. For example, if you’re traveling to another country, it’d be vital to have a travel adapter for the outlets.

Another popular option for technology for remote work while traveling is to pick up a portable charger for a laptop. Since you may not always be near an outlet, it is always worth it to have an extra charger with you.

This portable charger can then be used at any time, whether you’re on a plane, train, or with your toes in the sand.

Additionally, it’s important to make sure that you have quality headphones or earbuds for your phone conversations or video calls. Further, you’d likely want to make sure that they are compact, relatively small, and portable, so you can take them along with you on your travels.

By making sure you have the right tech, you can save a lot of stress in the long run for your remote work travel experience.

How to Travel and Work Remotely Tip #4: Maintain Communication

As you venture on your ‘remote work while traveling’ journey, you’ll want to make sure that you set up the best possible methods to maintain communication.

If you’re on the road or out and about for an extended period of time, you’ll likely want to schedule those meetings with your managers or coworkers ahead of time.

Often, having check-in calls or video conferences at least once per week is standard for most businesses and teams. You’ll want to make sure that you prioritize that time so that you can be attentive and present for the meetings.

However, it is important to understand that some employers do want employees to be in-person at least a few times per month, or a few times per year. It’s important to establish this expectation up-front so that you can plan accordingly.

Once you’re certain when you have to be back in person, you’ll be able to take the time to schedule that into your travels.

Ultimately, you’re always going to want to plan for the worst. In nearly every situation, you should expect the best but plan for the worst-case scenario, if it were to happen.

For example, if you can’t find an outlet, it is important to have that portable charger along with you. Or if you don’t have wifi, having the option to turn on a hotspot is key.

Take a few minutes to sit and think about all of the potential things that could impede your remote work while traveling. After you have a list of a few items, be sure to take the steps to mitigate any of the potential risks.

While you can’t plan for everything, you can take steps to reduce the risk.
