Why Now May Be the Best Time to Ask for a Raise

As much as everyone would love a raise, a lot of people don’t feel bold enough to ask. The thought of being turned down can be highly discouraging. It’s easier to say you will postpone asking so you can build up more accomplishments at work, even if that day never comes.

But now with unusually high inflation leading to alarming prices everywhere, can you really afford not to try your luck for a raise anymore?

The Wall Street Journal says now is the time to act, and shared some of the best ways to boost your odds.

Check What You Are Worth

One of the strongest arguments for requesting a raise will always be that other companies are paying more for the same work. If your company touts offering competitive salaries and opportunities for growth, they should back up what they say.

Have numbers to show what you are worth on the marketplace by checking salary offers from places like Glassdoor.

Practice Explaining Why You Are an Asset

From your perspective, you probably feel like you deserve the raise simply because you have been coming in working hard every day for a long time now. Don’t assume it is so self-evident to your boss, though. They want to know what’s in it for them, so be prepared to remind them of your accomplishments.

Think back over what major projects or assignments you contributed to and practice explaining how much you did in those pivotal moments.

Don’t Treat this Like Your Only Option

Regardless of whether you deserve it or if it feels unfair to not get the raise, don’t come off desperate. This conversation should not be you pleading for anything as if this is your only option. For one, desperation is off-putting.

And second, you do have other options. Employees have a lot of power right now. Research similar roles near you to reassure yourself that you’ll still land on your feet even if this doesn’t work out.

The possibility of being rejected or failing when you ask for a raise can be a huge deterrent. But if you never take risks, you never rise to new heights. Times are hard, so now is a great time to reach for something better.
