Chadds Ford Woman Gives a Sport Dominated by Men a Feminine Touch, Wins International Competition

By

Martha King, a Chadds Ford lumberjill, took first place at the inaugural Timbersports International Women’s Cup last month in Vienna, Austria last month, writes Jamie Apody for 6abc.

King started competing in timber sports in college at Penn State, following in her father’s footsteps.

“The sport of lumberjack sports, or timber sports, is the traditional practices of forestry just turned into competition,” she said.

While it is dominated by men, King gives the sport a feminine touch.

“It’s all about speed, accuracy, timing,” she said. “A lot of people when they find out what I do, they say, ‘I don’t believe it. I thought you’d be big, burly, maybe have a beard.’ Nope!”

King hopes that she can help more women decide to take up the sport.

“For a lot of women, they think ‘I can’t do something because I’m not big enough, I’m not strong enough, I’m not this, I’m not that,’” she said. “But when they see someone like me doing something as efficiently as I do, it gives them hope and it gives them confidence.”
