Dr. Don Flynn, of Abington — a beloved teacher, star baseball player, versatile athlete, and Air Force veteran — died on April 10 aged 83, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Flynn, a holder of a doctoral degree in English and master’s degrees in psychology and English from Temple University, was a longtime educator. He taught math and English at several high schools, including at Cheltenham for 28 years.

After retiring from teaching high school in 1996, he picked up classes at Jefferson, La Salle, Gwynedd Mercy, and Immaculata Universities.

In his youth, Flynn was a star baseball player at North Catholic High School. A baseball scholarship took him to Temple, after which he played for six seasons in the minor leagues. In addition to playing baseball, Flynn was a marathon runner and triathlete.

He also coached baseball, including at Thomas Jefferson University. In his honor, it has given out the Dr. Don Flynn award for athletic success, campus participation, and academic achievement since his retirement in 2004.

He married Beth Weiser Winstead in 1967, and the pair had two children, daughter Beth and son Michael.

“He was sensible, disciplined, loving, and humble,” said his wife.
