Sizzlis Go South: Wawa Plans Massive Eastern Seaboard Expansion by 2030
Wawa will expand in the next decade, launching its “most aggressive growth” in its history, doubling its store count, writes Laura Smythe for Philadelphia Business Journal.
Wawa now operates about 965 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and Washington, D.C.
It plans to expand its number of stores to 1,800 locations by 2030, opening an average of 100 stores a year.
The stores will open in existing and new territories, says Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens.
Those new territories include locations in states between Virginia and Florida to “fill in the market.”
The new sites will be a mix of neighborhood stores currently in use and new “travel center” rest stop-style Wawas off I-95.
Wawa noticed customer demand on the I-95 stretch between Virginia and Florida with customers stocking up on Wawa products in Petersberg, Virginia, while on their way to the Sunshine State.
The travel center stores will also tap into the growing electric vehicle market.
In total, Wawa offers electric vehicle charging at 90 locations and 705 charging positions.
Wawa will also continue to expand standalone drive-thru stores with two new stores planned in Pennsylvania this year.
