The early-bird daffodils are sagging, yet tulips are still slumbering, currently making the most pickable flower in Bucks County the dandelion. But prime flower-picking days are nearing. Candis McLean listed three local go-to spots in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The best way to ensure long-lasting, fragrant flowers is to pick them right from the source. Among the best pick-your-own outings in the Phila. region are three close ones:
Hellerick’s Family Farm, Doylestown
During its June–October season, Hellerick’s has harvestable cosmos, sunflowers, marigolds, and zinnias.
Reservations are required, and the blossoms go by the bucket ($14), which can be as filled to the brim as harvesters wish. If floral fans require multiple buckets (or refills later) the farm offers pricing on those options, too.
Peace Valley Lavender Farm, Doylestown
Lovers of lavender need to schedule some time at Peace Valley. Its sprawling fields have more than 3,000 of the lavandua genus, distantly related to mint.
A bundle cut by visitors by hand costs a mere $7; a nice afternoon onsite can be extended with a long walk and a brought-from-home picnic.
Shady Brook Farm, Yardley
Shady Brook Farm has 20 varieties of cut-your-own flowers from mid-June onward. Pricing is by stem: $3 each; $10 for five; $15 for a dozen. A wagon ride provides transport to gatherers.
