You might think that once you are working at a company you will easily be in the loop on any opportunities for advancement.

But oftentimes you might be blindsided by someone else’s promotion and wonder why you didn’t even know management was looking.

If you want to do better knowing bout promotion opportunities before they’re filled, Forbes shared some of the best methods that you should be utilizing. Here is a breakdown of what they recommended.

Speak to Your Boss

The simplest solution can sometimes be the most effective. Let your boss know you are looking to step up and they can keep you on their radar as someone to look at when promotions arise.

Check out the Social Groups

Current work colleagues are another clear resource, but it can be awkward to do so on the job. However, many jobs have employee activities and groups outside work. If you are part of the work bowling team, that’s a more relaxed environment to have a conversation.

Check the News

Is your organization in the news for some new project or expansion? That’s a good sign they will need workers and it might be good to start inquiring.

Ask Former Colleagues

Workers who have just left the company could have insight about the business, but no longer have to worry about keeping hushed about opportunities that they may have had an eye on.

Turn to a Mentor

Is there someone in the company with seniority who has taken you under their wing? They can be a good person to consult for how you can try and follow their trajectory.

Keep an Eye on New Hires

If the company just hired someone to lead a new department, it stands to reason that person will need people to fill out their team. Touching base with them could clue you in if they are looking for anyone from within the company.

Look Outside the Company

Promotions most commonly refer to advancement within your current company. But you might find that same higher level role elsewhere, and if you are checking a smaller company, you might have less competition than in your current job.

Even if there are no promotions happening currently, getting into the habit of keeping an ear out can help you be ready for when the time does come.
