If you like the company you are with, a promotion can wind up feeling even more rewarding than a new job elsewhere would.

But promotions are also more rare and difficult to determine what qualifications you are lacking.

If you have been hoping for a promotion and wondering what more you could do to help your chances, Indeed created a post on the topic. Here are some of the key tips to try.

Look at What Other Promoted People Did

If you want to know how to succeed, observe those who are successful. If you got passed over, ask yourself what that person who got the promotion instead does that may have made them stand out.

Develop New Skills

Don’t let your skill development stagnate. Go to conferences, take online classes, do something to add value to yourself. That way you have something new to show next time promotions are being considered.

Become a Leader

A good way to show you are worthy of a promotion is to already exhibit qualities that would make you suited for the bigger role. If you have more years at the job than your coworkers, embrace your natural development as somebody who can be a leader.

Be a Problem Solver

If you are encountering problems at work, it is likely the other staff are having the same issues. If you have discovered a workaround, share the information! People will appreciate that you are helping the team.

Ask for Suggestions

It is so simple that you might overlook it, but asking your supervisor for feedback on what you can do to demonstrate your ability could be the most efficient method to discover what you specifically need to change.

If you haven’t gotten that promotion, don’t give up hope yet. Give these ideas a try and see what kind of difference they make.

Indeed has even more detail for what you can do to improve your chances of promotion, so be sure to give their post a read here.
