Regardless of your reasons, sometimes your current career just no longer satisfies you. But the prospect of changing to a new career can be daunting due to what an enormous undertaking it feels like.

However, with some good guideposts to help steer you along, you can break the process down into manageable steps. For those wondering how to start, the Wall Street Journal recently offered some thoughts. Here are the most salient points.

Figure Out Your Transferrable Skills

Just because you want a new career does not mean you are starting from square one. You have no doubt built up expertise in many areas that can lend to other fields. For instance, if you worked in real estate, that requires knowledge in subjects like marketing, finance, business, and public speaking. Your old career might not be right, but those skills could be perfect for a career you will enjoy.

Build Your Network

Having connections always makes it easier to get your foot in the door, so don’t neglect your network. Many of the connections you already have may have ties to the career you are interested in. Check who might have a history with companies similar to where you want to work and see if they can introduce you to more people knowledgeable in what interests you.

Take Classes to Build Your Skills

Hopefully, some of what you know is transferrable, but it is likely you will have a few skills you need to develop.

While going back to school is one option, you certainly don’t need a new degree in every circumstance. Some schools like Wilmington University have certificate programs you can complete in a couple of months, or you can even develop your skills online through classes offered by places like LinkedIn Learning.

A career change is a big decision, but if it is sincerely what you want to do, it is absolutely possible if you lay the groundwork before you pursue this new avenue.
