Bucks County Bicyclists: Stop Riding in Winter? Snow Way!
Bucks County’s hobby bicyclists probably stowed their trusty steeds in the garage or basement back around Thanksgiving, acquiescing to falling temps and dwindling daylight. But an intrepid group of riders has pedaled on, not only tackling winter’s snow-covered trails but reveling in them. Wayne Fish, Bucks County Courier Times, caught the drift of their blustery pastime.
Fred Stucky and friends don’t let a few flakes — or zillions of them piled together — derail their regular bike rides. In fact, the white landscapes seem to invigorate their trips through Tyler State Park or Core Creek Park. Despite the powder, they bundle up, grab high-traction off-road bikes (or the “gravel” variety when things really get deep), and power through.
The riders see two advantages: A hearty cardio workout. And the peace of mind from landscapes draped in white.
“The snow in Tyler Park is probably one of the most serene two hours I get on a bicycle,” said Stucky. “It’s … as much for my mind as it is for my body.”
There’s also this advantage: If a rider happens to spill, there’s a soft bed of snow to land in.
