Willow Grove is Home to PA’s Last Full-service Sears, But There’s Not Much Left in There
Once the largest retailer in the country, Sears is currently gasping its last breaths in Pennsylvania, with only one full-service department store still standing, writes Bob Fernandez for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Located at Willow Grove Park, the store is a shadow of its former self. What was once a vibrant and crowded location now has the feel of a closeout sale, with posters advertising 60 percent markdowns.
The two floors have been scrunched into one, where discounted appliances now cohabitate with ping pong balls, mattresses, tools, apparel, pillows, and bedding.
There are just a few employees to serve the shoppers, most of whom just cut through the merchandise floor to the mall itself. Some are there just to use the restroom. Shoppers who have been coming to the store for decades now cannot find anything to buy.
“There’s hardly anything in there,” said Robin Mamolou, of Roslyn.
“We’ve been coming here since the mall opened,” added her husband, Paul. “Sears used to be one of our go-to stores. We bought a lot of clothes here. We’re sad about it.”
Across the globe, Sears had employed over 325,000 employees. Sears had businesses in Philadelphia and across Montgomery County and Bucks County as well as New Jersey in Oxford Valley, Deptford, Moorestown, Neshaminy, and King of Prussia Mall, all now gone.
