Homers for Hope, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit, will host its biggest charity event of the year — a softball home run derby — on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Clipper Magazine Stadium, the home of the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Homers for Hope helps families that have suffered a tragedy or severe hardship by raising funds through baseball and softball events. The organization’s goal is to provide financial assistance while the families cope with their trauma.

All proceeds from the Homers for Hope Fall Home Run Derby — sponsored by the Penn Medicine-Lancaster General Health Neuroscience Institute — will assist the Brill family: David, Traci, and their three boys (Derek, Tyler, and Evan).

Evan, 15, was born severely handicapped and requires 24-hour care, and David sustained a brain injury in 2018 after falling off a roof while at work. As a result of this tragedy, he spent two months in the intensive care unit, had three brain surgeries, and is now legally blind. Furthermore, his construction business had to shutter.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will bring together participants from along the East Coast to compete, starting at 4 PM, for the coveted Home Run Derby Heavyweight Championship Belt. In order to participate, all players have to pre-register and raise a minimum of $250. Prior to the Home Run Derby, a pair of exhibition baseball games (one youth and one adult) will be played, with participants all having raised money to support the Brill family.

“This is our 20th home run derby fundraising event, and we are proud to have helped over 25 families in need by paying more than $285,000 of their bills,” said John Durso, co-founder and president of Homers for Hope. “We hope our players and local support from the good people and businesses of Lancaster will join our presenting sponsor, Penn Medicine-Lancaster General Health Neuroscience Institute, in bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries and to help one of Lancaster’s own heroes, Traci Brill.”
