"Tightrope," by local artist Robert Beck, is one of his works on currently on display at the James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown.

Robert Beck, painter, used his artistic eye to capture on canvas some of his favorite Bucks County spots. These and other works of his will be on display at the Michener Museum, with a second showing in nearby Hopewell. Janet Purcell sketched in the details for The Times of Trenton.

Beck came to his art late in life. He spent his first 40 years as a businessman before he swapped the boardroom for a brush.

His medium-of-choice is oil. And his style imitates a written essay, capturing a single subject over an elapse of time. Numerous renderings of a barge, for instance, will suggest its movement down a waterway.

The Michener exhibit features some of his favorite local spots, including Stockton, NJ, and views of the Delaware River.

Other works with a regional theme bear titles such as “Bodine’s Farm,” “Ice Storm,” “Evening Ram,” and “January Sun.”

Rain — a subject not easily captured on canvas — is something of a sweet spot for Beck. He opts for a more subtle approach to capturing wet streets and misty views.

In addition to his visual art, Beck is a longtime contributor to ICON magazine. He writes about the process of creating art while also addressing the social and environmental issues his subjects may face.

More on Beck’s Michener Museum exhibit, which runs until January 2022, is at The Times of Trenton.
