‘Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience’ at Tower Theater? ‘Not Too Bad ‘
It was a shaky opening for “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby thanks to some early mis-communication about when and where it would open.
But the show itself? Not too bad, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Two timed tickets cost $99 for a Sept. 5 show.
Inside, the museum comes first, covering Vincent Van Gogh’s life and displaying underwhelming reproductions of his paintings.
There is a life-size 3D model of Van Gogh’s painting The Bedroom that lets visitors step inside and get photos.
Another plus are moving images projected over two 3D sculptures (Van Gogh’s head and a vase with flowers).
The immersive experience begins in a massive hall with four enormous screens on the Tower’s stage.
Here, Van Gogh’s paintings come off the canvas in a virtual gallery. At one point, visitors are enveloped in a field of sunflowers which rise into the sky.
An orchestral score mixed with quotes from Van Gogh augments the experience, described as “unnervingly eerie and strikingly beautiful.”
The exhibit was “visually fantastical” but “lacked the emotional resonance that draws so many to Van Gogh’s story,” Farr concludes.
