King of Prussia Mall has enjoyed a great summer that saw shoppers return to its stores and restaurants in large numbers, writes Konrad Putzier for The Wall Street Journal.

U.S. shopping malls overall have had a good quarter despite the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19. Retailers and property owners also benefitted from two encouraging trends: nice weather and newly vaccinated shoppers who felt more comfortable being in enclosed spaces around strangers.

According to data analytics firm Placer.ai, mall visits surpassed 2019 levels for the first time in July. Foot traffic was up 0.7 percent overall compared with July 2019.

Some malls, however, are doing better than others.

At King of Prussia Mall, for example, visits were down 3.4 percent in the second quarter compared to two years earlier. By comparison, the Destiny USA Mall in Syracuse saw a foot-traffic drop off of a disheartening 17.6 percent.

Additionally, many malls are bracing for a tough fall season.

Colder weather often brings out fewer shoppers, and the rise in COVID-19 infections could also make more shoppers unwilling to visit enclosed malls.
