Amanda and Josh Hatheway, of Langhorne, got to enjoy Philadelphia Flyers’ first game of the regular season from a VIP spot at the Wells Fargo Center as part of the team’s new program that honors frontline workers during the pandemic, writes Maria Pulcinella for WHYY.

The Hatheways and their young sons Westin and Carson were seated behind the Flyers bench and next to Gritty’s game-day perch. They were the first family to be recognized by the new program.

Amanda and Josh both work at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Amanda is a nurse who cares for patients discharged from the hospital, including coronavirus patients. Meanwhile, Josh is an EMT and clinical lead for the emergency room technicians. He also treats COVID-19 patients.

On top of all the stress of the pandemic, Amanda was diagnosed with leukemia a few months ago.

When they learned they were being honored by the Flyers, the pair burst into tears. The emotions were high once again at the game when the players tapped their hockey sticks to the ice to celebrate the duo.

“We’re very simple people,” Josh said. “So for us this is over the top.”
