Bristol High School graduate Sydney Brooks was nominated for the Television Academy Foundation’s 45th College Television Awards for her drama film titled “Óménàlà.”
Brooks produced the film while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The College Television Awards recognize student-produced films from colleges and universities around the country.
Winners will be announced during the red-carpet award ceremony on March 28 at the Television Academy in North Hollywood, California.
Óménàlà tells the story of a 19-year-old Nnamdi, who returns to Nigeria with his mother and sister for his father’s funeral.
Now in the role of the head of his family, Nnamdi is forced into new responsibilities surrounding his father’s inheritance while facing opposition from his family.
“Beyond the cultural specificities, Óménàlà is a universal story about growing up, taking on unexpected responsibilities and navigating loss,” said Brooks. “We hope that audiences can relate to our main character, Nnamdi, and learn something new about burial rites in other cultures.”
“I’m really proud of all the hard work we put into the film,” said Brooks. “To get recognition from members of the Television Academy makes all the sleepless nights feel more than worth it.”
Tickets for the event are $25 for students with an ID and $50 for general admission. Tickets are available online.
