The church is known for being an important part of the Underground Railroad.

One of Bucks County’ most historically-significant churches is looking to undergo some much-needed restorations to keep it intact.

Mount Gilead Community Church, located at 1940 Holicong Road in Buckingham, is one of the most historically-significant buildings in Bucks County. Once a major part of the the Underground Railroad, it is now kept as an important piece of American history in the area.

“This historic jewel is one of the oldest AME churches in Bucks County,” said Rep. Tim Brennan, who recently made a visit to the old church.

“It was founded by a group of freed Black people and runaway slaves in 1834. Today the church has four services each year – Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.”

During his visit, Brennan met Leanne Yerkes, the chair of the Operating Board who is leading efforts to restore the church. The aging property remains intact, but years of natural wear on the budding have led people like Yerkes to concentrate on keeping the church, as well as its historic cemetery, the way it once was.

“It is a truly sacred place,” Brennan said.
