The U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club is one of the events for which a Perkasie man is accused of stealing and reselling tickets.

Perkasie resident Robert Fryer is in a hole. But it’s nothing to celebrate. The U.S. Attorney’s office has snagged him for alleged embezzlement of golf event tickets. John George teed up the story in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Fryer is a former USGA employee. For the past eight years, he has been stealing tickets to high-profile matches and then providing them surreptitiously to brokers. He targeted U.S. Open rounds at both Merion Golf Club and Pebble Beach.

Over the years, the 23,000 tickets he swiped amounted to a $3 million USGA loss. Instead, they netted Fryer $1 million. He received payments both in cash and via PayPal.

“The defendant allegedly stole revenue from a legitimate business that pays taxes, employs many, supports a non-profit organization, and brings excitement and income to our district with U.S. Open events at courses like the Merion Golf Club,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams.

Fryer faces a maximum sentence of 300 years in prison, as well as payment of fines and specific restitution to the USGA.

More on this case is at the Philadelphia Business Journal.
