Amid Industry Titans, Mom-and-Pop Entities Find Support in Bucks County’s Focus on Small Business

Bucks County's friendliness toward small businesses earned it a spot on SmartAsset's list of best places in Pennsylvania for mom-and-pop entities.

Bucks County’s focus on small business helps ensure that owners of home-grown shops and service providers make it amid a sea of bigger players. In fact, many small businesspeople do quite well in Pennsylvania. The local commerce environment propelled the county to a top-ten spot in an assessment of statewide friendliness to mom-and-pop operations. SmartAsset compiled the data.

To determine the ranking, SmartAsset considered:

  • The proportion of people with small business income
  • The amount of business income they reported
  • The amount of income tax they paid

Bucks County ranked tenth in the state, with an overall small business index of 35.87.

On a national scale, the county landed at 1,714th in terms of small business friendliness.

Bucks County’s focus on small business showed returns of 23.09 percent, the fourth-highest in the state and significantly above the Pennsylvania median of 18.58 percent.

It also has an average small business income of 10.21 percent, which is the second-highest in the state. The metric is well above the state average of 7.51 percent.

Concerning the taxes due on that income, in-county small business owners owe $10,919. That outlay is just slightly above the Pennsylvania average, $10,835.

Chester County ranked as the best place for small business owners.

Delaware and Montgomery counties also made the list, in fifth and fourteenth place, respectively.
