West Chester native Carl Nassib, a defensive lineman for the Las Vegas Raiders, has become the first active NFL player to publicly come out as gay, writes Ken Belson for The New York Times.

“I just want to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay,” the Malvern Prep grad said in an Instagram video recorded at his West Chester home. “I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that, like, one day, videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary, but until then I’m going to do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting, that’s compassionate.”

Nassib said he would donate $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit that focuses on suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth.

He also took the opportunity to thank his coaches, teammates, and the NFL for their support.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement following Nassib’s announcement, in which he stated that he was “proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today. Representation matters.”

Meanwhile, his team showed its support by writing “Proud of you, Carl” on its official Twitter account.
