Making Way for Air Force One, Chester County Flying Field Cools Its Heels on Standby as Revenue Soars Away

When Joe Biden assumed the Office of the Presidency, a small airport in Chester County faced a new set of restrictions that have severely impacted its operations, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.

Whenever Biden travels to Greenville, Del., temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) are initiated over a 12-nautical-mile radius around his home.

New Garden Flying Field in Toughkenamon is within that radius, meaning that for the duration of Biden’s visit, operations at the airport come to a screeching halt and all planes are grounded.

New Garden Flying Field Aviation Director Jon Martin is worried that after a while, many aviators who store their aircraft at the airport will relocate them — losing 80 percent of annual revenue.

Martin has been trying to find a solution to the issue for the past few months, but what he has encountered is a swirling headwind of bureaucracy.

“Nobody, between the Bureau of Aviation, the FAA, or the U.S. Secret Service has really said ‘Let’s get the community together and discuss the validity of TFRs,’” said Martin. “Everyone is just pointing in the other direction.”
